There’s always something dangerous lurking on the moons you visit in Lethal Company, even if it doesn’t look like it. Even before you get into the facility and start gathering scrap, you can run afoul of the strange creatures that call the moons their homes if you aren’t careful.

Lethal Company: How To Beat The Butler

Here’s how to defeat The Butler and get the Kitchen Knife in Lethal Company.

If you see a large bird in the distance, complete with giant eyes staring at you from between the trees, you might have just come across the Giant Sapsucker. This bird normally keeps to itself, eating sap and caring for its nest and future hatchlings, but if you threaten its child, you’ll face its wrath.

Lethal Company is currently in Early Access on Steam, so the information below may be subject to change at a later date.

Where To Find The Giant Sapsucker

The Giant Sapsucker can only be found on Vow and Adamance, both of which are forested moons with moderate climates, though it has an increased spawn rate on Vow, similar to the Forest Keeper and the Bracken.

It is an Outdoor-only entity, and it and its nest can spawn all over the surface of the moon save for the areas closest to the main facility, and it’ll most likely be near a group of trees, as they’re part of its behavior.

Giant Sapsucker Behavior

Player character watching a Giant Sapsucker peck at a tree for sap near the facility in Lethal Company.

The Giant Sapsucker is a tall, two-legged avian creature that resembles a giant woodpecker with large eyes and an extremely long beak, and can only be found Outdoors.

There can only be one Giant Sapsucker at a time on a moon; it will always spawn as soon as the ship lands and the day starts, and it will be present for the whole day, unlike creatures such as the Forest Keeper, which generally spawn in the evening unless it’s an Eclipse.

Giant Sapsuckers occasionally go to sleep while sitting on their nest, signified by closed eyes and a soft whistling, and you can get much closer to them without triggering aggression if you crouch down and walk up.

When they’re left alone, the Giant Sapsucker will stay passive and alternate between nesting, sleeping, dancing, and pecking while staying within a medium-sized radius of its nest, only making them a threat if you get too close for too long or someone tries to steal their eggs.

If you are noticed by one, you can back away to a safe distance of around 20 steps. The Giant Sapsucker won’t enter its Enraged Mode and will go back to minding its business after a few moments, allowing you to still safely transport scrap and move around it unless it’s spawned in an unfavorable location, such as near a Fire Exit.

A Giant Sapsucker will squawk if you get too close, then stop and stare at you, and will also follow you until you get away from their nest.

A unique feature of the Giant Sapsucker is that its eggs also double as loot, with each one’s value tending to range between 20 and 45 Credits on average.

Every nest is guaranteed to have at least three eggs, making them fairly lucrative if they spawn with higher scrap value, but you can only hold one egg at a time and collecting even one egg and keeping it will trigger Enraged Mode, and the Giant Sapsucker will stay aggressive unless it’s killed, or you drop the egg.

Since the Giant Sapsucker is primarily passive and is extremely powerful, you can let it kill off hostile enemies such as Eyeless Dogs and Baboon Hawks, which will attempt to attack it.

Enraged Mode

When something approaches their nest, whether it’s a player or an entity, they will enter Enraged Mode and attempt to hunt down the nearest entity while pecking it to death. If you manage to escape into a facility or your ship, they will eventually go back to being passive.

The longer the Giant Sapsucker stays in its Enraged Mode, the faster and more damage it will do, so it’s best to avoid making it enraged at all costs unless you’re prepared and about to leave.

While enraged, the Giant Sapsucker’s movement speed is massively increased, and it can easily outrun a player with zero weight, even if you’ve taken the TZP-Inhalant. Their attack damage is low, but they’ll chew through your health in seconds thanks to their equally rapid attack speed.

Giant Sapsuckers also enter Enraged Mode if you or someone else steals one of their eggs, but unlike if it’s triggered by proximity, they will not become passive until you drop the egg, or drop the Baby Sapsucker that the eggs can hatch into if held long enough.

If the Giant Sapsucker is enraged because you stole an egg, it will rip open the doors to the ship to get in and attack you, so hiding in your ship won’t work; only dropping the egg, killing it, or going into a facility will save you.

They will also lock onto the person who has stolen the egg specifically, instead of whoever is closest, and not only will it hunt them down, but it is also capable of remembering who stole the egg and will attack them on sight if they’re spotted again, such as if they enter and leave a facility.

How To Kill The Giant Sapsucker

Giant Sapsucker being struck by a bolt of lightning during a storm on Vow in Lethal Company.

The Giant Sapsucker has 28 Health, and while it is possible to kill it with just a Shovel, it is almost impossible for a solo or even grouped player to kill one due to its immense health, attack, and movement speed.

The best method to kill one is to utilize Stormy weather, as a Giant Sapsucker will be killed in three lightning strikes, and it’s incredibly easy to lure one to a metallic object, such as a shovel.

Lightning strikes will make the Giant Sapsucker enter Enraged Mode, but if the lightning has been attracted by a metallic object, the entity will focus on that object. If it was a random strike, it will randomly attack anything nearby.

Locate the Giant Sapsucker’s nest first, then either go inside the facility and gather metallic scrap, or get other metallic items such as a shovel from your ship, and place them in a safe area where they can’t be struck from while you get enough objects for a kill.

Then, pick it up and use the method of dropping and picking it back up to get it close to the nest, sit it down near the edge of the Giant Sapsucker’s detection range, then use its following behavior to lure it onto the item.

Other Methods Of Killing The Giant Sapsucker

Player character holding and hitting a Giant Sapsucker with a shovel in Lethal Company.

Besides lightning, there are several other methods you can use to try and kill the Giant Sapsucker, but they will usually require more progress first and won’t be as safe:

  • Like most other entities, they can be killed by an explosion from an Easter Egg, but this requires you to have found at least one Easter Egg before, and not all of them explode, so you may end up getting killed because you lack explosive ones.
  • The Giant Sapsucker can be killed instantly using the Company Cruiser, eliminating it as a threat and allowing you to get all the eggs safely. The downside is that the cruiser costs 370 Credits, and you’ll likely need to be on quota two or three before you’ll have enough credits for one.
  • The Old Bird is an entity that is hostile to everyone except other Old Birds, and if one spawns on a moon alongside the Giant Sapsucker, it will hunt it down and kill it as soon as it’s activated. This will also allow you to grab the eggs, but the Old Bird will also hunt you down, but if there are other entities, it will likely go after them first, giving you an opportunity.
  • If you’ve obtained a Shotgun from a dead Nutcracker, it can be used to kill the Giant Sapsucker much faster than a shovel, as long as you’re hitting the most shells possible, but you still risk dying, and you’ll need at least six shots to kill it, depending on if you get max damage with each one.

How To Safely Steal Giant Sapsucker Eggs

Player character crouching near a Giant Sapsucker with TZP Inhalant and waiting for it to sleep in Lethal Company.

Because of the Giant Sapsucker’s speed and ability to open the ship’s doors, the best time to steal eggs from it is right before you leave the moon, either at night or whatever time is best, but it’s not recommended doing this solo.

Like if you’re going to kill it, one person should be designated as the egg-holder and draw the Giant Sapsucker’s aggro, while the other people in the group grab as many eggs as they can.

If you’re the egg-holder, you’ll want to have low or zero weight for better stamina and higher speed, and carrying a TZP-Inhalant can help you make it back to the ship in time.

While the entity is distracted, everyone but the first egg-holder should go a different path and run back to the ship, then immediately start the ship before finding somewhere to store the eggs so they don’t hatch.

The egg-holder can then either sacrifice themselves with the egg or try to run back to the ship, jump onto the railing, and shut the door in time before the Giant Sapsucker reaches them and avoid them as the ship leaves the moon.

If you’ve purchased a Teleporter, those back on the ship can teleport the egg-holder back while the ship is leaving, saving them and the egg.

Whether alone or in a group, it’s also possible to use a Jetpack or a flock of Tulip Lizards to fly away from the Giant Sapsucker, but this is a lot riskier, as they can easily catch up to you still, and if you’re holding an egg, they’ll just wait where you land.

When attempting this solo, you’ll only be able to carry one egg, making it a lot less worth it unless you need the extra scrap to make quota.

If you want to do it solo, you’ll need to have a TZP-Inhalant, the Giant Sapsucker to have spawned in a favorable location, preferably not far from the ship, and you’ll need to wait until it’s sleeping.

Locate the Giant Sapsucker and the nest, then completely inhale the TZP-Inhalant while at the edge of the minimum safe distance, then crouch and wait for the entity to go to sleep.

Ensure you hear it snoring, then approach the nest while crouching, only standing up once you reach it, then grab an egg and run for the ship, pull the handle to start the ship, then quickly shut the door while it’s approaching and the ship is leaving.

If you’ve timed things correctly, you’ll have a few moments of extra time when the Giant Sapsucker is just waking up to successfully reach the ship and leave before it can rip open the doors and get you.
